Phasing

The enclosure was phased to the Middle Saxon period, based on stratigraphic evidence. The material culture recovered included 2 Anglian sherds. This was not the latest phase, as the ditch was clearly cut by enclosure 012AD07217.

Discussion

Only a short segment of this ditch remained undisturbed by later recuts. However, sufficient was excavated in order to ascertain that this feature cut through ditch 012AD00797 and was cut in turn by ditch 012AD07217. Like enclosure 012AD00766 some 1.9 metres to the east, there is clear evidence for a terminus at this point, although no evidence for the northern part of the entrance remained.

The ditch was filled with a uniform sandy loam, with less than 5% chalk inclusions, was slightly darker (Munsell 10YR 3/2) than the surrounding ditches and contained daub and charcoal flecking. Together with 012AD00797 just to the west, traces of cess were noted on the base of the feature. The animal species recovered were mainly cattle, with sheep/goat and pig also present, in similar percentages to all of the ditch fills in the surrounding area.

The feature was cut into hillwash with 20% chalk inclusions, and had a shallow V profile.
